Green Grass Cloggers Film Screening
The film Green Grass Cloggers: The History | Part 1: The 1970s chronicles the formative years of the revolutionary North Carolina-based percussive dance performance team from its spark in 1971 through its rise in popularity at mid-1970s folk festivals and the beginning of the group’s professional traveling years in 1978.

The narrative history includes archival film and photographs, as well as interviews with several Western NC personalities (Doug Baker, Pam Budd, Dudley Culp, Karen Philbeck Bartlett, and Rodney Sutton) and other GGCs who may be familiar to local viewers (Brian DeMarcus, Jerry Lovelace, Cherie Sheppard, Earl White, Toni Jordan Williams).
The 2026 film is produced and directed by Leanne E. Smith and M. Chad Smith, whose previous collaborations include Floating Dancer: The Story of Robert Dotson, the Walking Step, and the Green Grass Cloggers (2016, documentary), The Misadventures of Dudley Culp (2021, comedy), and Hoppin’ Possums: Steps from the Green Grass Cloggers (2024, documentary).
The public premiere at the Madison County Arts Council will include some special guests.
