SUMMARY:Hell in a Climate Haven Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Hell in a Climate Haven\nA film by Thomas Comick &amp\; Amelia
 Waldeck\nViewing: June 19th\, 2025 at the Madison County Arts Council 90 S
 . Main Street \nMarshall NC\, at 6:30PM\nIn the wake of Hurricane Helene\,
a woman searching for her emu\, a man rescuing neighbors in a kayak\, and
local artists reckon with the myth of safety in the North Carolina mounta
ins.\n“Hell in a Climate Haven” is a short documentary capturing the a
ftermath of Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina through the eyes of
those left to pick up the pieces: artists whose studios were washed out\,
a woman searching for her lost emu\, and a man who paddled through flood
waters in a kayak to save his neighbors. Set in Marshall\, Swannanoa\, and
Asheville\, the film explores what’s left behind when a so-called safe
haven is swallowed by disaster. \nWe meet a woman mourning the loss of he
r emu\, swept away by the rising waters. A man recounts how he paddled his
kayak through submerged streets\, rescuing neighbors in the dark. And loc
al artists reflect on the fragility of both community and creation in the
face of natural disaster. \nThrough poetic visuals and intimate voices\,
the film challenges the notion of Appalachia as a climate refuge\, reveal
ing the cracks in even the most "protected" landscapes. It’s a personal
and urgent portrait of survival\, loss\, and the resilience of ordinary pe
 ople in extraordinary circumstances.

SUMMARY:Trek 6 Las Sobras Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION: The term “Las Sobras”\, means “the left overs”\, and
yes it’s true \, when they say that “ left overs taste better the next
day”.\nTrek6 has created a vast and unique body of work that spans over
three decades\, a diversity of mediums\, and multitude of cities and cult
ures.\nTrek’s works are an experiment with resonance through the use of
color\, line \, and\nrhythm that examine historic\, indigenous and regiona
lly relevant iconography. Portraits clash against lines that get smashed b
y color patterns and fragmented by shapes creating dynamic and vibrant com
positions. The duality between being traditionally schooled in art\, versu
s his graffiti writer upbringing allows for a variety of techniques and st
yles to converge in his work. Drifting from acrylic to aerosol and even in
cluding soundscapes compositions and installations.\n\n\n"This exhibition
is a collection of pieces that either haven’t been shown or have minimal
ly exhibited. These pieces and others like them stay stacked in my studio
becoming a sort of calendar as the years pass by. After spending more time
with these pieces I start to appreciate them in a different context than
the more exhibited works. I spend years staring at them\, putting them awa
y only to pull them out years later and approach them with new eyes. I fee
l that these pieces capture a snap shot of my creative journey over the ye
ars as they weave in and out of different aesthetics and thematics but sti
ll keeping my thumbprint over time." \nTrek 6 is the moniker of Madison Co
unty artist Oscar Montes\, learn more about his work HERE\n

ustomary verve and insight\, Terry Roberts' latest novel is an evocative p
ortrait of humankind's capacity for courage\, love\, and hope as well as f
olly\, and another love ballad to his region of North Carolina.\nClinton S
alter is the sheriff who never wanted to be sheriff. A World War II vetera
n and widower\, he is elected due to the political machinations of his bro
ther. His new territory is the fabled Madison County\, North Carolina—a
place of the steepest mountain ridges and most isolated coves and valleys.
A place where the seasons matter more than the calendar and the past is a
s real as the present.\nWhen he first takes office\, he hopes only to deal
with the drunk and disorderly and stolen tractors\, but matters quickly a
ccelerate into arson\, grave robbing\, and murder\, and he begins to suspe
ct his own brother’s motives. He finds solace in the friendship of Cathe
rine Metcalf\, a lonely high school principal whose husband has been in a
coma and dying for years. Their only refuge is Clinton’s farm high in th
e mountains\, where they can retreat from the world. As they seek to creat
e a new life for themselves and the county\, political violence and family
cruelty threaten to shatter their visions." \nLearn more about In the Ful

DESCRIPTION:Knackered Ramblers\n(Laura Boosinger &amp\; Mike Compton)\n\nwi
th Thomm Jutz &amp\; Erich Brace\nIn concert at the Madison County Arts Co
uncil.\nTickets by phone (828)649-1301\nor online HERE.\nPresented by the
MCAC and the Bravo Group\nas part of their 'Long Leaf Pine Variety' Series
.\nThe MCAC is delighted to present an evening with the Knackered Ramblers
\, Mike Compton and Laura Boosinger\, and the acclaimed singer-songwriter
duo of Eric Brace and Thomm Jutz. Both duos perform nationally and interna
tionally and present an engaging performance filled with stories\, and ori
ginal material based on the fabric of humanity.\nIn the world of Bluegrass
and Appalachian Old-Time Laura Boosinger and Mike Compton are two of the
most respected on the circuit. They appear as The Knackered Ramblers\, a l
ight-hearted poke at the length of their tenure. \nMentored by Bluegrass l
 egend\, Bill Monroe\, Mike is a Grammy and IBMA Award-winning musician/com
poser. He is a founding member of The Nashville Bluegrass Band and has wor
ked with big names such as John Hartford\, Elvis Costello\, Norman Blake a
nd Doc Watson. He contributed to the “O Brother Where Art Thou?” sound
track which just celebrated its 25th anniversary at the Grand Ole Opry.\nL
aura Boosinger studied traditional Appalachian music under the tutelage of
David Holt\, and was a member of his band\, The Lightning Bolts. One of L
aura’s truest musical friendships was the one she formed with George Shu
ffler\, guitarist and bass player for the Stanley Brothers. Laura has been
instrumental in maintaining the tradition of shaped note singing in works
hops at major events like MerleFest. Her podcast “Down the Road on the B
lue Ridge Music Trails” is featured on WNCW.\nTheir debut album “We B
’ Ramblin’” has garnered this praise: \n"It’s hardly surprising th
en that the pair’s initial collaboration\, the aptly titled\nWe B Rambli
n!\, comes across as lively\, compelling and thoroughly enticing. A combin
ation of old-time tunes\, Southern spirituals\, and winsome originals\, th
e music pays homage to a traditional tapestry. It’s an impressive debut\
, one that reflects Boosinger and Compton’s combined savvy and skills."\
nBluegrass Today\nEric Brace and Thomm Jutz are a formidable duo\, two sin
ger-songwriters from Nashville whose second album\, Circle and Square\, ar
 rived in January\, 2026. It’s a gorgeous rumination on creativity\, art\
, beauty\, love\, and friendship in an age of destruction and hatred. Thei
r last album\, Simple Motion\, hit #1 on the Folk DJ chart (FAI) in March\
, 2024.\nEric moved to Nashville twenty years ago from Washington D.C.\, w
here he was leading his acclaimed roots-rock band Last Train Home\, named
D.C.’s “Artist of the Year” in 2003 by the Washington Area Music Ass
ociation.\nThomm moved to Music City from his birthplace of Germany in 200
2 and immediately became an indispensable sideman to the likes of Nanci Gr
 iffith\, Mary Gauthier\, David Olney\, Kim Richey\, and others\, while als
 o building a studio and a reputation as a producer and songwriter.\nEric a
long with Peter Cooper earned a Grammy nomination for Best Children’s Re
cord after making I Love: Tom T. Hall’s Songs of Fox Hollow.\nThomm was
awarded “Songwriter of the Year” at the 2021 IBMA bluegrass awards. Hi
s songs have been recorded by the likes of Tim O’Brien\, Billy Strings a
nd the Steeldrivers.\n"Simply stated their recording\, Simple Motion\, ref
lects these virtues. \n"Both Brace and Jutz are in that pantheon of musici
ans that seem to be able to hit that elusive golden double – prolific an
d sustained excellence. This album does not disappoint...Eric Brace and Th
omm Jutz can do no wrong."\n- Rob Dickens\, Listening Through The Lens

SUMMARY:Holding Together: Cloth\, Material\, and Making
DESCRIPTION:\n\nLocation: Madison County Arts Council\, 90 South Main Stree
t\, Marshall\, NC 28753\nThe Madison County Arts Council is pleased to pre
 sent Holding Together:  Cloth\, Material\, &amp\; Making\, a major group
exhibition exploring weaving as both material practice and cultural metaph
or. Curated by Marshall-based artist Amber M. Jensen\, the exhibition brin
gs together artists selected through a combination of invitation and open
call\, creating a dynamic conversation between regional voices and artists
  working across the country.\nFeaturing textiles\, ceramics\, basketry\, h
 andmade paper\, wood\, metal\, book arts\, video\, and movement-based work
\, the exhibition expands traditional definitions of weaving to consider h
ow artists today are creating connections across materials\, histories\, d
isciplines\, and communities.\nArtists included in the exhibition represen
t a broad geographic range\, with works traveling to Marshall from New Mex
 ico\, Minnesota\, Illinois\, Vermont\, New York\, Tennessee\, and througho
ut North Carolina.\nCurator Statement\n"Weaving is one of humanity's oldes
t technologies for making connections. Long before it became a textile pro
cess\, it was a way of understanding how separate parts could be brought t
ogether to create strength\, beauty\, and belonging. The artists in this e
xhibition are all exploring that idea\, asking how we build meaning throug
 h repetition\, accumulation\, structure\, and care. Whether working with c
 loth\, clay\, wood\, paper\, movement\, or metal\, each artist reminds us
that making is ultimately an act of connection."\nParticipating artists in
clude Elysabeth Cianci\, Kimberly English\, Angela Eastman\, Miranda Heidl
 er\, Holly Wilder\, Eleanor Annand\, Julie Leonard\, Christine Novotny\, A
nn Coddington\, Kayla Powers\, Kyle Cottier\, Hannah Bennett\, and Sawkill

py the first-floor galleries throughout its run\, with special opening-nig
ht installations extending onto the third floor. Third-floor works will be
on view for opening night only.\nCurator\n\nAmber M. Jensen is a textile
 artist\, educator\, and curator based in Marshall\, North Carolina.\nWorki
 ng primarily with handwoven cloth\, wool\, and textile-based processes\, J
ensen explores themes of memory\, repair\, place\, and connection. Her wor
k has been exhibited nationally and internationally and has been featured
by organizations and publications including the American Craft Council\, S
